Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents
In Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, Lindsay C. Gibson explores how having an emotionally immature parent can affect a person's emotional development and relationships well into adulthood.
The book begins with an important distinction: a parent can love their child and still be emotionally immature. Emotional immaturity isn't necessarily about cruelty or intentional neglect. Instead, it involves difficulty understanding and responding to emotions, taking responsibility, showing empathy, and creating genuine emotional connection.
Children naturally adapt to their parents. When a parent is emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, self-focused, or uncomfortable with vulnerability, the child may learn to suppress their own needs, become excessively responsible, avoid conflict, or constantly seek approval.
These adaptations can continue into adulthood. A person may become a chronic people-pleaser, struggle to establish boundaries, feel guilty for having needs, or repeatedly seek emotional validation from people who are unable to provide it.
Gibson's central message is that understanding these childhood adaptations can help adults stop blaming themselves and begin developing healthier, more authentic relationships.
The goal isn't simply to blame parents or cut them off. It's to recognize what the parent is realistically capable of giving, let go of unrealistic expectations, and learn to provide yourself with the emotional validation and boundaries you may not have received growing up.
This book might be too heavy for lots of people. Please take enough time for yourself and I always welcome you to come and talk with me.
